Growth Over Winning

Our mission at Marana FC is the growth of the player and the growth of the person. Wins and losses come and go. The player our kids become — on the field and off it — is what stays.

We compete hard. We play to win. But we measure success by how much each player and each family grows over the course of the season, not by the trophy at the end of it.

A team is a contract between players, parents, and coaches. Below are the promises each of us makes — and what each of us can expect from the others.

Player Commitment

What I promise as a member of Marana FC
  1. I'll listen to my coach. When the coach is talking, I'm focused. I ask questions when I don't understand. I try what's asked of me, even when it's hard.
  2. I'll work hard, every practice, every game. Effort is something I control. I bring it every time I step on the field.
  3. I'll be a good teammate. I lift up the players around me. I celebrate their goals. I help them up when they fall. I never blame, mock, or talk down to a teammate.
  4. I'll respect the game. Referees, opponents, the field, my own equipment — I treat them all with respect. I don't argue calls. I don't trash-talk. I let my play speak.
  5. I'll be on time and prepared. I arrive ready to play with my gear, water, and the right mindset. If I'm going to miss, my parents tell the coach in advance.
  6. I'll have fun. I love this game. I play hard because I love it, not because I'm afraid of getting it wrong. Mistakes are how I learn.
  7. I'll grow. Every season, every month, every practice, I want to be a slightly better player and teammate than I was before. I commit to that.
Signed: every player who pulls on a Marana FC jersey.

Parent Commitment

What I promise as a Marana FC parent
  1. I'll cheer, not coach. The sideline is for support. I cheer for effort and good play — by my child, by their teammates, and by the opponents. I leave the coaching to the coach during games and practices.
  2. I'll respect the referees. Refs make mistakes. So do players. So do coaches. So do I. I won't shout at officials, argue calls, or model behavior I wouldn't want my child to copy. If a referee is genuinely unsafe or unfair, I bring it to the coach — not the sideline.
  3. I'll communicate early. If my player is going to miss a practice or a game, I let the coach know as soon as I know — not the morning of. Schedule conflicts happen; surprises hurt the team.
  4. I'll trust the process. Player development isn't linear. Some weeks my child will look great. Some weeks they won't. Both are part of the journey. I won't measure my child's worth by their last game.
  5. I'll bring concerns to the coach directly. I won't air grievances on the sideline, in group chats, or with other parents. If something is bothering me, I message the coach through the website. We'll talk it through.
  6. I'll follow the 24-hour rule. If something at a game upset me, I wait 24 hours before reaching out — then I do reach out. We'd rather hear it than have it sit.
  7. I'll model the behavior I want my child to learn. How I act on the sideline becomes how my child sees the game. I want them to see grace, encouragement, and class.
  8. I'll support the team, not just my child. Marana FC is a team, not eleven individual players. I cheer for everyone. I help when help is needed. I represent the club well.
Signed: every parent who entrusts their child to Marana FC.

Coach Commitment

What I promise as the coach of Marana FC
  1. I'll prioritize growth over winning. My job is to develop players and people. Wins follow when development is real. I won't sacrifice long-term growth for a short-term result.
  2. I'll be prepared. Every practice has a plan. Every plan has a purpose. I won't waste your child's time with random drills.
  3. I'll treat every player fairly. Every player gets coaching, attention, and honest feedback — not just the standouts. No favorites.
  4. I'll give every player meaningful playing time. Players develop by playing. Within league rules, our standard is that every player on the roster plays at least half of every game they attend. (See the AYSO philosophies below.)
  5. I'll communicate clearly and often. Schedule, expectations, focus areas, and changes — you'll hear them through the website's weekly update. If you have a question, I'll answer it.
  6. I'll respect the game. Officials, opponents, and opposing coaches get my respect — even when I disagree with them. My players watch how I handle myself.
  7. I'll be honest. If your child is doing well, I'll tell you. If there's something to work on, I'll tell you that too. No mixed signals, no false praise.
  8. I'll keep them safe. Safety — physical and emotional — comes before any tactical or competitive consideration. Heat, lightning, injury, conduct: I'll always err on the side of safety.
  9. I'll never forget this is youth soccer. These are kids. The goal is for them to love the game, work hard, learn lessons that outlast the sport, and come back next year wanting more.

The AYSO Six Philosophies

AYSO is built on six philosophies that have guided youth soccer for decades. As a competitive team playing under AYSO 350 Alliance, we hold to all six — with the understanding that competitive play modifies how two of them apply.

⚽ Everyone Plays

Every player on the roster plays a meaningful portion of every game. Our standard at Marana FC: every player plays at least half of every game they're available for, barring discipline or injury.

🤝 Balanced Teams

AYSO traditionally builds balanced teams so games are competitive and fun for everyone.

Modified for competitive play: Marana FC is a competitive (Alliance) team selected by tryout, not a balanced regional team. We compete against other comp teams of similar level. The spirit of the principle — fair, meaningful competition — still guides us.

📝 Open Registration

AYSO traditionally welcomes any child who wants to play.

Modified for competitive play: Comp teams are formed through tryouts and have roster limits. However, every child in our community is welcome to try out, and players not selected for our team have a home in AYSO Region 206's recreational program.

🏆 Positive Coaching

Coaches build players up. Encouragement, clear teaching, and high standards — not yelling, sarcasm, or fear. We coach the way we'd want our own kids coached.

🙌 Good Sportsmanship

Respect for officials, opponents, teammates, the game itself. We win with humility and lose with grace. How we play is a reflection of who we are.

📈 Player Development

Long-term growth over short-term results. Every practice and every game is a chance to get better — technically, tactically, and as a person. This is the foundation of everything we do.
